Ben askerdeyken oldu. Bir deniz astsubayı ile birlikte jeep içerisinde Çanakkele'nin Kirtepe Köyüne gidecektik. Bir akşamüstü karargahtan çıktık. Kirteppe Köyü yakınlarında yolda giderken, jeepin farları karşıma acayip bir müfreze çıkardı. Nasıl heyecanlandım, nasıl frene bastım, bende bilmiyorum.

Jeep zınk diye durunca, astsubayım neredeyse camdan fırlayacaktı. Döndü, bana biraz da sertçe sordu:

Ne var, neden durdun?

Elim ayağım tir tir titriyordu. Dedim ki:

Komutanım, siz görmüyormusunuz? Önümüzde tüfekli, teçhizatlı bir manga asker, yolu bölmüş gidiyor. Bakınız, hemen ilerde...

Bu askerlerin kıyafetleri şimdiki gibi değildi. Ben kim olduklarını, ne olduklarını anlamadığım için aptallaşmışken, astsubayım gözlerini ovuşturup yerinden kalktı, oturdu ve mırıldandı:

BİR ASKERİN GÜNLÜĞÜNDEN

"Türk siperleriyle çok yakındı...Bizim siperlerimizle o kadar yakındılar ki, ateş kesildiği zaman alçak sesle konuşurduk. Ayaklarımızın ucuna basarak dolaşır ve gürültü çıkarmamaya çalışırdık. Genellikle hava kararır kararmaz ateş kesilir, biraz daha rahat hareket etmeye başlardık. Gecenin orta yerinde ve aşağı yukarı hergün aynı saatte, Türk siperlerinden bir ses yükselirdi. Öyle gür, öyle içli ve dokunaklı bir sesti ki, dinlemeye doyamazdık... Yarım saat kadar süren bu konser, bir zaman sonra, komşu siperlerde de duyulmuştu. Zaman zaman bizim siper, Türk'ün konserini dinlemeye gelenleri misafir ederdi. Bu sese hepimiz hayrandık. Ancak ne söylerdi, bu tatlı ve iç yakan, ruhumuzu kavuran nağmeler ne söylerdi, bilmezdik. Fakat derinden derine etkilenirdik.

Bazen hafif bir esinti çıkar ve bu yanık nağmeleri başka yöne ******ürürdü. Biz, kulaklarımızı dört açıp daha iyi duymak için, neredeyse başımızı dışarıya çıkaracak hale gelirdik. Efsunlu bir sesti bu!..

Gündüz savaştığımız insanın gece gece söylediği müziği dinlemek ve ondan etkilenip duygulanmak, ne ilginç bir işti...Ama gerçekti...

Bir akşam, konser saati gelmişti, ama o alıştığımız ses duyulmuyordu. İkinci, üçüncü, dördüncü akşam, yine konser yoktu... Hepimiz merak içinde kalmıştık. O gece, durumu öğrenmeye karar verdik... Türkçe bilen savaş muhabirine yazdırdığımız bir kağıdı taşa sarıp Türk siperlerine fırlattık. Bu kağıttaki iki cümleyle, konserin niçin kesildiğini soruyor ve selam yolluyorduk Türklere...

Bir süre sonra, fırlattığımız taş, arka yüzü yazılmış kağıtla birlikte siperimize atılmıştı. Bu kağıtta ne yazıldığını biraz da tahmin etmekle beraber çok merak ediyorduk.

Kağıttaki tek Türkçe cümlenin ne dediğini anlamamız uzun sürmedi. Haberi getiren arkadaşımızın yüzünü hüzün bürümüştü. Tabii, cümleyi duyunca, hepimiz aynı hüzne gömülüverdik...Kağıttaki cümle şöyleydi;

-'O arkadaşımızı, geçen hafta vurdunuz!...'
